Our testing setup
Every VPN we review is tested on the same reference hardware and across the same devices so results are directly comparable:
- Windows 11 desktop on 1 Gbps fibre.
- MacBook Pro (Apple silicon) on the same connection.
- iPhone and Android handsets on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Router-level installation on providers that support it.
Tests are repeated over several days and averaged to smooth out server-load variance.
Speed testing
We measure download, upload, and latency on baseline (no VPN) and then via each provider's fastest protocol to five reference regions: UK, Germany, US East, US West, and Singapore. We record the retention percentage vs. baseline for each region so a small drop on a fast line is not mistaken for a large drop on a slow one.
Streaming
For each provider we try to unblock Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and DAZN from multiple regions. A stream must load in 4K where the service supports it and hold the resolution for at least five minutes to count as a pass.
Torrenting
We check whether P2P traffic is allowed on all servers or restricted to certain locations, verify port-forwarding availability, and confirm that the kill switch prevents any real-IP leak by pulling the network cable mid-download and inspecting our public IP with the VPN's published leak-test tool.
Gaming
We measure ping to the nearest server, look for jitter under load, and try connecting to matchmaking servers in three regions to see whether the VPN routes cleanly or introduces packet loss.
Privacy and logging
We read each provider's privacy policy carefully, check the jurisdiction, and look for independent audits of the no-logs claim (Deloitte, PwC, Cure53, KPMG, or similar). We also check court and subpoena records for evidence of what user data was — or was not — available when requested.
Security features
We verify AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption, test the kill switch on every platform the provider ships an app for, check DNS/IPv6/WebRTC leak protection, and evaluate additional features such as multi-hop, obfuscation, split tunnelling, and threat protection.
Ease of use
We install every app from scratch and time how long it takes to reach a connected state, review the settings hierarchy, and note friction points a non-technical user would trip on. Apps are also assessed against basic accessibility criteria: readable font sizes, keyboard navigation, and clear connection status.
Customer support
We open at least three live-chat tickets across different hours, submit an email support request, and rate the response for speed, accuracy, and helpfulness. We also check the depth of the self-service knowledge base.
Value and pricing
We compare the true cost of every plan (monthly, annual, and multi-year) after any launch discount rolls off, cross-check the money-back guarantee, and note which payment methods are accepted — including cash and crypto for privacy-conscious users.
